Cleveland "Sis" Handsborough

Cleveland Handsborough was born to the parentage of Raymond Handsborough of Hopewell Community and Rosie Bell Handsborough of Buckner Community. Cleveland Handsborough (known as Baby Sis, Sis, Jim) was born in Nineveh, Texas, not far from Hopewell Community on May 25,1938. She was the 7th of 9 children born to her parents.

She accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church for most of her life . She was a faithful member and servant in the church. She was a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and Mission No. 2 member where she served as the Treasurer.

She was a hard worker outside of the church and enjoyed helping others. She was employed at Centerville Nursing Home for years until her father became ill and she became his caretaker until his demise. She loved to read her Bible, garden, pick berries, spend time with her grandchildren & great-grands, and listen to church music especially Lee Williams and Rance Allen. She was a giver. She was very straight forward in her approach. If there was a concern, she would deal directly with the issue, as she avoided conflict.

She received her education through Hopewell Community School and later graduated from Centerville High School. She later attended Navarro Jr. College to pursue her goal of becoming a LVN. She encouraged her children to pursue their goals as well.

As her health begin to decline, she relocated to Dallas -Fort Worth, Texas as well as some time in Houston, Texas. She visited Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Fort Worth, Texas upon her latter days of serving the Lord.as well as other local churches.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond & Rosie Handsborough; eight siblings, J.D., Tenola, Luella, Eugene, Baby Ruth, Javan, Little Sister, Ida Bell; children who preceded her in death were Janice Cleveland Handsborough and Gale Oneda Handsborough; grandson, Brandon Yarbrough.

Left in God’s care to cherish her memories and fulfill her legacy are her devoted children, Rev. Gerry M. Handsborough (Fort Worth), Linda R. Handsborough (Centerville), Paullette Handsborough Taylor (Ft. Worth); thirteen grandchildren, Krystal, April, Deja, Xavier, Ieshya, Gerry Jr., Gerion, Cierra, Alaric, Roland, Gabriel, Elijah; twenty-one great grandchildren; nieces and nephews and a host of extended family and friends.

December 16, 2021 marked the day that Cleveland fulfilled her earthly assignment and was called home to live with Our Lord and Savior. We rejoice that her legacy lives on….

Homegoing services for Cleveland will be held 1 P.M., Monday, December 20, 2021 at Walters Funeral Home, Centerville, Texas. Interment will follow in Hopewell Cemetery.
