Alton D. Homes, 93, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on August 19, 2016.
He was born on June 20, 1923 in Freestone County, Texas to Bennie and Essie Holmes. He graduated from Jewett High School in 1941. Alton served in the Army from February 10, 1943 until February 27, 1946, serving as a medic at hospitals in England. While in the Army, he loved to play checkers and table tennis.
He then moved to Houston and attended the University of Houston and a local community college trade school. Alton worked at Exxon Chemical from 1946 to September 1997 and loved to tell people he worked there for fifty-one years, five months & three days.
Alton was also proud of his longtime membership as a Mason of over fifty years.
He was married to Villa Vastie Parker from December 2, 1949 until her death on May 18, 1994. Alton was quoted in a Jewett High School Reunion yearbook as saying, The day I married Villa Vastie Parker was the most important event in my life. They had one daughter, Geneva Lea Holmes Dalton. Geneva is married to Roger Dale Dalton, who immediately became the son Alton never had, when they married in 1999. Geneva and Roger have two yorkies, Prada Bella and Samson, who loved their sweet Papa, and he loved them. Alton was known to talk to Prada Bella on the phone, and she to him!
Alton always said his most important lifes lesson was to be fair, honest and to live a good life.
He loved to ride his tractor and work with his cows, and he continued to do so until he was eighty-eight years old.
Alton then moved to Bryan/College Station for a year and a half in 2012. Soon after his 90th birthday, he moved to Houston to be closer to family, which meant the world to him.
