Bret LaValle Hassler, a long-time member of the Centerville community, was born on September 28, 1958, in Tomball, Texas. He passed peacefully in Houston, Texas, on January 9, 2026, following a long struggle with his health. His life was a tapestry woven with the threads of dedication, love, and service, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure to know him.

Bret’s journey began with a solid foundation in education, graduating from Centerville High School before earning a Bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. His intellectual pursuits were complemented by a noble commitment to his country, as he proudly served in the U.S. Air Force, embodying principles of duty, honor, and sacrifice.

As a retired employee of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Bret dedicated himself to public service, continually seeking to contribute positively to society. His deep commitment to his community was also reflected in his long-standing role as an elder at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Centerville, where he found solace and joy in attending services and supporting his fellow congregants.

Bret’s interests were wide-ranging, encompassing a love for music that transcended genres and an appreciation for the simplicity of life spent outdoors. He found great pleasure in fishing, camping, hiking, and nurturing his garden, cultivating not only plants but relationships with nature and those around him. The Centerville Farmer's Market held a special place in his heart, where he enjoyed engaging with the community and celebrating the fruits of local labor. In the comfort of his home, Bret would often indulge in watching westerns, these films resonating with his love for storytelling and rich, compelling characters.

The pride that Bret had for his family was immeasurable. He is survived by his devoted wife, Shirley Hassler; son, Bubba Williams; daughter, Anna Kelner and her husband, Joel; and grandchildren, Tyler Kelner, Deacon Kelner, Destiny Williams, and Riggs Williams. He also leaves behind his sister, Sherry Baldwin, along with cherished nephews, Eddie Baldwin (Wendy) and Shane Hassler, and great-nephew Joey Baldwin. Bret was also a proud son, having taken on the role of caretaker for both of his parents, Edith Lou (Barger) Hassler and Carl "Cotton" Hassler, before their passing, exemplifying the profound respect he held for family legacy.  Additionally, Bret was preceded in death by his brother, Darrell Hassler.
