Funeral services for Donald Eugene Summers, 87, of Centerville have been set for 10 AM, Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at the Walters Funeral Home Chapel in Centerville. Rev. John Goss, pastor of the Central Baptist Church in Crockett, will officiate. Howard Vann will officiate at a Masonic Service for Don which will take place before the burial which will be in the North Creek Cemetery in the Ninevah Community of Leon County. The family will receive friends in a visitation at the funeral home on Monday evening from 5 PM until 7 PM.
Don Summers was born September 16, 1929 in Ft. Worth, Texas to Jeff Richard Lasterer Summers and his wife, Ollie Mae (Bailey) Summers. He worked as a telephone splicer, for Southwestern Bell. He then served his country in the U.S. Army. After he left the military, he worked for the Civil Service in telephone communication. He eventually retired from the Civil Service and he and his wife, Mary Nell (Leathers) Summers, settled in the Ninevah Community.
Don was active in the Masons and was a lifetime member of the Killeen Lodge #1125 and a member of the Centerville Lodge #1291 and the Jewett Lodge #427. He was a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite, a member of the Tranquility Lodge 2000 and a member of the Buffalo Eastern Star #157. He was a member and a Deacon of Central Baptist Church in Crockett. Don enjoyed hunting and fishing but he especially enjoyed being with his family. Don was a giving person. For a time, he served Meals on Wheels. He read out loud at the library; at the school for young children and at the nursing home to the residents. He taught young men seeking to become Masons. He was active in his church life, always taking part in the worship, fellowship and service projects.
Early on July 7, 2017, Don passed away in Temple, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jerry Lynn Summers; a brother, Jeff Richard Summers, Jr. and two sisters, Beatrice Varo and Mary Riley. His surviving family includes his wife, Mary Nell Summers of the Ninevah Community; son, Garry Summers of Copperas Cove; son, Don Richard Summers (Joni) of Kempner, Texas and daughter, Donna Nell Chappell (John) of Belton; ten grandchildren: Stacy Stone (James), Michelle Tibbits (Jordan), Amy Strickland (Keith), Sam Summers (Kasey), Dalton Summers, Doss Summers, Johnni Hajda, Johnathan Chappell, Dustin Chappell (Jennifer) and Codi McCorkle (Michael) and nineteen great grandchildren: Ariana, Merrick, Kace, Stacia, Savanah, Shelby, Hayden, Lance, Madison, Jase, Miles, Zyton, Kreed, Tanner, Bronsen, Brynnley, Breck, Hadlee and Bryce.
Serving as pallbearers: Jan Archer, Donald Ballard, Gregory Burchfield, Ronald Hyde, Billy Pipes, Robert Rodgers, Jack Shadix and Jerry Wakefield. Serving as honorary pallbearers: Masons of District 24 of the Grand Lodge of Texas.
