Doris Jean (Greathouse) Hickman

July 21, 1948 — September 23, 2025

LaPorte, Texas

She graced us with her presence on July 21, 1948, and stood before HIS grace on September 23, 2025.

Doris was born in Bay City, Texas, and was the middle child of John Wesley and Bernice Theresa Greathouse. Her family moved around a bit until they ultimately settled in Pasadena, Texas, and opened a hamburger stand off of Spencer Highway. Doris attended and graduated Pasadena High School, Class of 1967. While in high school she showed her talents for cosmetology and worked at the family hamburger stand. At that burger joint is where she mat, and later married, David Lee Hickman in 1971. In 1973, she was given her one and only child, daughter, Theresa Ann (Hickman) Lee. Doris was thrilled to become a grandma in 1994 to her only grandson, Austin Lee Hickman.

Doris primarily held professional careers. She worked as an operator for Reliance in the late 70's and had a very long tenure with Exxon USA in their training and reprographics departments. Throughout her career, she made many great friends and had many fun times with them. She retired in 2009, and moved from the city to her country place in Centerville, Texas.

Doris didn't let retirement stop her. She continued her oil painting, sewing, jewelry making, crafting, cooking, and of course, her occasional casino donation or cruise. During Doris' final moments, she was surrounded, cared for, and loved by family. She passed peacefully, just as she had always prayed for.

Doris was preceded in death by her father, John Wesley Greathouse; her mother, Bernice Theresa (Brown) Greathouse, both of Pasadena; two brothers, John Wesley Jr. and Thomas Edward Greathouse, both of the Ft. Worth area; and her most favorite nephew, Shad Philip Chowden of LaPorte.

Doris is survived by her two sisters, Helen Caudle of Centerville and her two children, Ramona Garrett and John Caudle, as well as their families; and Kathryn Koutnik of LaPorte; only child, Theresa Ann (Hickman) Lee, and husband, James Lee, and only grandchild, Austin Lee Hickman, all of Deer Park. Her surviving family in the Ft. Worth area include nieces, Debra Simmons, Joy Nelson, and Lori Cornett and nephews, Lonny Province, Joel Province, Emmitt Province and Wade Greathouse, as well as each of their families. Needless to say, Doris will be greatly missed by many.

A memorial service honoring Doris will be held on October 25, 2025, at 11 A.M. at Chapel of the Hills Assembly of God Church in Centerville, Texas followed by a luncheon. A private inurnment service will be held at a later date.
