Frank Edwin "Ed" Hoop

Frank Edwin “Ed” Hoop was born in Mattoon, Illinois on December 20, 1929 and died on August 5, 2021.

Ed began a 40-year career in printing while taking a high school co-op class. While attending high school, Ed was an apprentice in a printshop half of the day. Whilst working and attending high school, he also earned and purchased the first car for his family.

Following high school, he and his friend, Rut, completed a hitch-hiking/work trip across the country on Route 66. After, Ed enlisted in the National Guard, and in 1950, the US Air Force during the Korean War. In his years of service, he was stationed in Denver, Colorado and later Lubbock, Texas. During his enlistment he worked in the Air Force printshop and at Hausauer Printing Company part-time. Before his honorable discharge as a Staff Sergeant in 1954, He became married and started a family.

After his honorable discharge Ed continued to work for Hausauer Printing for nine years. He managed the Piggly Wiggly Print Shop and owned and maintained several rental houses in Lubbock until 1971. Ed was an active member of the Lions Club of Lubbock for many years.

In 1971 the family relocated to Houston when Greater Houston Publishers recruited him to manage production of their printing company. He advanced to Vice President and was President of Greater Houston Publishers at his retirement. Lacking things to do Ed purchased and maintained Noomie’s Trailer Park in South Houston.

In 1980, Ed purchased 100 acres of land near Flynn and began a part-time career in cattle ranching. Following his retirement in 1995, they moved to Flynn to live in their renovated old church.

After retirement, Ed served as election judge for Leon County, he earned a Water Treatment Certification from Texas A&M University and worked part-time for Concord Robbins Water Department. He volunteered at Flynn United Methodist Church, Flynn Volunteer Fire Department, and built a large traveling replica of Ft. Boggy for the Friends of Ft. Boggy. He simultaneously played golf at Hilltop Lakes every week.

Ed had many hobbies: a lifelong love of golf, sailing, deep sea fishing, roller skating, snow skiing, dancing, painting, scuba diving, coin collecting, home renovations, antique car restorations, kayaking, stained glass, and gun stock checkering.

In his last years of life, Ed could be found restoring his beloved Winnebago, camping, golfing, fishing, kayaking and teaching his grandchildren. Ed had a zest for life; he was fearless, adventurous, and a great provider for his family.

Ed is survived by his wife Doris Hoop of 36 years; his daughters, Diane Hoop Block and husband, Ken, Deborah Pickering and husband, Phil, and Shannon Pickering; sons, Thomas Pickering and wife, Jen, and Tim Pickering. He was a loving Paw-Paw to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Cherishing their memories of him are grandchildren, Erica Rainey, Lora Rainey and husband, Kieran Handmer, Emma Pickering, Eli Pickering, Wyatt Pickering, Luis Daniel and Jack Pickering and great grandchildren Miles and River Handmer.

Those Ed is uniting with in heaven are Clarence and Dortha Hoop, parents, Robert and David Hoop, brothers and Jinger Hoop, daughter. A special thanks to Crockett Hospice nurses: Erin Stone, Melissa Waters, Melissa Riley, Kristi Gerfers, Jessi Mitchell, Christina Vickers and Casey Holden.
