George Herbert Lowry, age 89, of Centerville, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home on April 28, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was a man defined by his love of the Lord, his seventy-two-year-old love story with wife Dixie, his love of family bonds, and his strong work ethic.
George was born on August 6, 1936, in Beaumont, Texas, a son of the late Edgar Pat Lowry and Eva Lois Lowry. His family moved to Palacios, Texas where he graduated from high school in 1954, and married his sweetheart, Dixie, and their love story began. They moved to Austin, Texas where he attended and graduated from The University of Texas with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management.
He raised his family in Alvin, Texas, where he was employed at McGinnis Bros. for fifteen plus years. In 1977, he took a risk, went out on his own, and started a dirt excavation company, Rebel Contractors, Inc. George took great pride in building his business with integrity and a true work ethic. He made many life-long friends along the way and retired at the age of eighty-five, still successfully bidding on jobs. He was very proud of the fact that his company will be fifty years old next year.
George had an insatiable passion for driving the roads and exploring the world with Dixie and family and friends. Whether navigating new cities and states with close couple friends or creating lasting memories on family trips with his children and grandchildren, he cherished every journey and memory made - AND every new “great restaurant find” along the way. When George was at home, he was happiest with dirt on his hands tending to his yard and roses. He took great pride in cultivating a warm and beautiful home, which served as the heart of family gatherings for many years.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his beloved brothers, Robert (Bobby) Lowry and Lacey Lowry; and his grandson, Wade D. Wilson. He leaves behind his wife, Dixie Lee Lowry; three siblings who were blessed to also be raised as his children, Sharon Apodaca (Dan), Debbie Strickland (Larry), and Pat Lowry (Debbie); daughters, Lisa Barkdull (Rick) and Cindy Easterling (Ward); and son, John Lowry (Caren); sixteen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
To honor George’s memory and his true spirit of quiet generosity, go find a person in need or a charity you believe in and give humbly.
