John Douglas Taylor, Sr., a devoted family man, skilled entrepreneur, and lover of the outdoors, passed away peacefully at home on May 26, 2026 in Centerville, Texas. Born on February 5, 1936, in Lovelady, Texas, John spent his life embracing the values of hard work, family, and a deep connection to the country.
John’s journey led him from Texas City to Leon County, driven by his love of hunting and fishing, his oldest brother, “Doc” Wooley, and for the serene beauty of rural life. Settling in Centerville, he established and successfully operated Taylor Dozer and Trackhoe Service, a heavy equipment business that stood as a testament to his dedication and entrepreneurial spirit. His career was marked by his unwavering commitment to excellence and service to the community.
Beyond his professional life, John was a man of simple pleasures and strong passions. He was an avid fan of westerns, with a particular fondness for John Wayne movies, which captured his adventurous spirit and love for classic storytelling. Family gatherings were dear to him, especially those filled with family members playing in the band, laughter, stories, and his special “family reunions” where he would play host to all of his family and friends, near and far, which brought everyone together around good food, great music and warm company.
John is survived by his loving children, Jay Taylor (Liz) of Centerville, Texas and DeeDee Taylor Anderson (Paul) of Texas City, Texas. His legacy continues through his grandchildren Tara, Amy (Casey), CJ (Chani), Toby (Jess), Brooke (Kenny), JD, Cody (Latricia), Felice (Alex), Jessica (Ryan) and Stephen, as well as numerous great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Also, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, who will carry forward his memory with love.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Filmore Taylor and Hattie Elizabeth (Gray) Taylor; his first wife, Nell; his second wife, Aleene; and his late wife, Deniece; son, Clyde Weaver Taylor; great-grandson, Jaxon Robbins; siblings, Doc Wooley, CW Wooley, and Ruth Gilbert; and his son-in-law, Glenn Anderson. Their memories remain deeply cherished by all who knew him.
A visitation to honor John Douglas Taylor, Sr. will be held on June 10, 2026, from 12 Noon until 1 P.M. at Walters Funeral Home, Centerville, Texas. The funeral service will follow on the same day beginning at 1 P.M., also at the funeral home. John will be laid to rest in New Salem Cemetery in the Centerview Community of Leon County.John’s life was one of steadfast devotion—to his family, his work, and the simple joys found in nature and tradition. He leaves behind a lasting impression of kindness, strength, and resilience. He will be warmly remembered and deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
