Joyce Aileen Swarthout was born in Buffalo, Texas on October 2, 1931 to Leonard and Americus (Beggs) Ridenour. As an adult, she and her husband, Harold Smokie Swarthout, lived for about 30 years in Houston. They then moved back to Leon County where Mr. Smokie passed away in November 2002. Ms. Joyce has lived here for almost 40 years. She attended the Siloam Church before it was closed.
Ms. Joyce was a homemaker. She enjoyed working on her familys genealogy. When she was able, she would work in her flower beds or crochet. Ms. Joyce especially loved to see and visit with her children and grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a granddaughter, Stacie Swarthout and three great granddaughters, MaKayla Crawford, Breanna Abraham and Shelby Slade. Ms. Joyce passed away on March 18, 2017 in a Waco, Texas hospital.
Surviving family includes two sons, Larry Swarthout and Michael Swarthout, both of Buffalo; two daughters, Cheryl Burks of Buffalo and Sandra Asbridge and her husband, Gary of Woodway, Texas; three brothers, Wilburn Ridenour and his wife, Nina, of Buffalo, Leonard Weldon Ridenour and his wife, Mary, of Buffalo and Tommy Ridenour of Dew; nine grandchildren; several great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service is set for 4 pm, Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at the Siloam Cemetery in Leon County. No public visitation has been scheduled but the register book will be available for signing during regular business hours at the funeral home. Bro. Phil Smith will officiate and burial will follow the service. Serving as pallbearers will be Bubba Lee, Michael Swarthout, Christian Slade, Nathan Crawford, Justin Grissett and B.J. Keefer.
Walters Buffalo Funeral Home in Buffalo is in charge of all arrangements.
