Chuck will always be remembered for his steadfast guidance, his sense of humor, generosity, his legendary weekends, and family gatherings.

On March 10, 1962, LD "Chuck" Mayes, Jr. was born to the union of Evelena (Drewey) and LD Mayes, Sr. He was born in Waco, Texas and later moved to Normangee, Texas. He worked for the City of Normangee as a Utilities Supervisor for many years. Chuck moved to Waco and worked for the City of Waco for fifteen years. Later, he was employed by STV, where he worked as a Senior Construction Inspector for twenty-five years.

Chuck will always be remembered for his steadfast guidance, his sense of humor, generosity, his legendary weekends, and family gatherings. He was famously known for his one-of-a-kind barbeque.

On June 12, 1993, Chuck married the love of his life, Diane Mayes. While he was a devoted father to his own children, his love, wisdom, and guidance reached far beyond his family. He became a father figure to countless others, offering encouragement, support, and unconditional care to anyone who needed it. He had the rare gift of making everyone feel like family.

Chuck was a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan, whose passion for the team brought him both joy and madness at the same time. He created countless memories with family and friends.

Chuck leaves behind a beautiful legacy and will be deeply missed by his loving wife of thirty-three years, Diane Mayes; his children, Wendye Durio (Ivory), LaTousha Mayes, Joseph Mayes (Teresa), Da'Shai Mayes (Christopher), Denard Lankford (Gwen), and Darnell Lankford; his ten grandchildren; his four sisters, Helen Bell (Gene), Beverly Ann Mayes, Sharon Smith, and Brenda Waters; one brother, Quentin Mayes (Laquinta); two aunts, LV Mayes and Alice Hayes; aunts and uncles from California; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.

Chuck was preceded in death by his mother, Evelena Mayes Jones; step-father, Sam Jones; father, L.D. Mayes, Sr.; brother, Timothy Whitmore; and aunt, Minnie Thomas.

A homegoing service honoring Chuck's life was held 1 P.M., Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Walters Funeral Home, Centerville, Texas. Interment followed in Culton Cemetery, Leona, Texas.
