A homegoing service for Lula V. Johnson will be held 10 A.M., Thursday, July 8, 2025, at Two-Mile United Methodist Church, Leona, Texas. Rev. Linda C. Bell will officiate the service. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. until service time Thursday at the church. Interment will follow in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Dallas, Texas.
Lula V. Johnson was born March 10, 1930, to parents, Rev. V.E. Johnson and Lemma Washington-Johnson in Leona, Texas. She was one of seven children and one adopted brother. Lula was educated in Leona School District. She was married to Elven "Shack" Bartley and moved to Dallas, Texas, and to this union, four children were born. She studied and graduated nursing school as a LVN. She worked as a nurse at Parkland Hospital for decades. She was respected and praised for her servitude and skills. In 1956, Lula and the children joined Elizabeth Chapel C.M.E. Church in Dallas, Texas. She was a dedicated member for more than forty years. Passionately, she served as Missionary Vice President under Bishop Norris Curry from 1968-1976.
On the local level, she was the stewardess president, worked with the willing workers, the elderly, the youth, the adult Sunday School Department, and the sick and shut-ins; all of these ministries and auxiliaries required time, energy, commitment and devotion, qualities that exemplified the body of Christ. This was Lula Johnson. Sis. Johnson also held many district officers' positions in the C.M.E. Church. She attended annual conferences as an elected delegate on numerous occasions. But the highlight of her life came when she and cousin, Quincel Woods, visited the Holy Land and walked the path Jesus walked, a journey, she would never forget. Before moving to Midway, Texas, Elizabeth Chapel wanted to express their gratitude to this extraordinary woman. Generally, the term emeritus is applied to someone who has been in a position for many years, keeping that rank or title as a token of respect or honor. Since Elizabeth Chapel could not give Sis. Johnson that honor for one specific office of the church, she then was declared MEMBER EMERITUS; a member of Elizabeth Chapel C.M.E. Church forever. Due to life changing circumstances, Lula married Eloys Johnson. They were married for fifteen years until his demise. Together, they traveled and enjoyed life in retirement.
Then in 1991, Lula and three of her grandchildren moved to Midway. She joined Two-Mile Methodist Church and fellowshipped with all churches in the Leona Circuit which included: Hillary, Tanyard and Madisonville. At this time, Two-Mile was in its original building. She immediately became involved with the Two-Mile Committee in successfully building a new church under the leadership of Rev. Carey Cauley, Jr. She was appointed Lay Leader and served as Annual Conference delegate consistently from 1991 until 2019. She could not wait to get to church to give her report to the members. Lula served on numerous committees: Annual 2nd Sunday September Homecoming, Paradise Cemetery Day, Young Women Leadership, Vacation Bible School, Official Board, and Sunday School Teacher subsequently, serving each with leadership, dedication and humility.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Wanda Ruth B. Graves; grandson, Andre Graves; brothers: Lonnie "Jack", Connie V., and Romie; and sisters, Ermatene and Mae Pearl. She leaves to cherish her memories, Elven Gene "Bo" Bartley, Syphronia B. Jenkins (Harold), and Debora B. Young (Lee); her one-hundred-year-old sister, Minnie Ola Johnson (A.J.); eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.
