Samuel Walter Chandler

August 27, 1954 — March 6, 2023

Samuel Walter Chandler, II, age 68, of Centerville passed away in his home March 8, 2023. He was born August 27, 1954 to Charles Ray & Alice Elizabeth (Tubb) Chandler in Pasadena, Texas. Samuel was raised in the Pasadena area and had lived off and on in Leon County, finally settling and making it a permanent home in the eighties.


Samuel worked as a social worker for the Crockett Center for Independent Living in Crockett, Texas for a number of years. He went above and beyond for the patrons he served, becoming a Disability Advocate for those who couldn't speak for themselves. He facilitated in grant writing, meeting with former Texas Governors, such as Ann Richards, George Bush and Rick Perry and even traveling to Washington D.C. to participate in a handicap rally at the Nation's Capital. Sam was instrumental in having handicap areas placed around the Houston County Courthouse in Crockett, as well as organizing and assisting a team of handicap members to go on an excursion to Mount Everest. He also advocated for reading literacy and computer literacy, assisting many in obtaining a driver's license when they otherwise could not have done so with out reading assistance.


Sam enjoyed country life and was a hunting and fishing enthusiast. Sam also enjoyed watching television shows about hunting, fishing and automobile repair. He enjoyed the travel opportunities his former job had afforded him, as well.


Sam was preceded in death by both of his parents; brother, Darwin Ray Chandler; sister, Lisa Jo Chandler; brother-in-law, Paul L. Weiland and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.


Surviving family members include sisters, Lana Weiland and Neva Lynn Shamblin (Kenneth Richard); nephew, Joshua Lee Weiland (Kenith Fisher); niece, Neva Renee Richardson (Daniel) and great nieces and nephew, Taylor Nicole Morales, Dylan Jay Morales and Abby Richardson.


Private memorial services are planned for a later date.


Arrangements are under the direction of Walters Funeral Home, Centerville, Texas.
