Shirley Hunter

Shirley Hunter, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025, in her 88th year. Born on September 9, 1937, in Weatherford, Texas, Shirley was the cherished daughter of Luther Banes and Mable Beatrice (King) Crutsinger. She was the proud older sister to Sam Crutsinger, who brought her immeasurable joy as they navigated the adventures of childhood.

Shirley received her early education at Brooklyn Heights Elementary, where she fostered a spirit of curiosity and camaraderie, before moving to Fort Worth with her family. There, she attended Strickling Heights Junior High and later Arlington Heights High School, where she embraced her love for learning and her friendships. As a child, she cherished roller skating, collecting coins to indulge in treats at the local five-and-dime store, swimming, and making lasting memories with her friends.

In 1957, Shirley married her first husband and welcomed their first son, Bick, just a year later. Their second son, Lane, completed their family two years after. Determined to be an active part of her sons' lives, she took a position as the assistant to the superintendent at the local school. For thirty dedicated years, Shirley served the school community with unwavering commitment. She embraced the transition to modern technology, mastering computer skills after decades of relying on pencil and paper. Her enthusiasm shone through in her involvement in One Act Play competitions, where she skillfully contributed as the sound and light technician. Shirley had a profound affection for her grandchildren and reveled in outdoor activities, often seen riding her bicycle or exercising amidst the tranquility of her surroundings.

Later in life, Shirley found love again when she married William "Bill" Hunter, a football coach at the same school she was employed. Together, they retired to the serene community of Hilltop Lakes, where they enjoyed leisure time and the beauty of nature.

Shirley Hunter leaves behind a legacy of love and joy, survived by her devoted sons, Bick Lemons (Jennifer) of Bryan and Lane Lemons (Kimberly) of Jackson, Tennessee; step-children, Vanice Chandler of Houston, Russell Hunter (Gena) of McGregor, and Stephanie Hunter of Plano; brother, Sam Crutsinger of Weatherford; grandchildren, Grace Ellyn, Kate Valentina, and Benjamin Lemons, Mandy and Jason Graham, Chelsea and Matt Hambrick, Cameron and Brianna Hunter, Joseph and Angeli Chandler, Ann Marie and Anthony Hernandez, and Thomas and Stephanie Chandler; and great-grandchildren Jaiden, Madi, Gage, Cahnnon, Hunter Lynne and Hayes Russell. Her humorous spirit and nurturing heart will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her . 

Shirley was preceded in death by both of her parents and husband of twenty-seven years, William "Bill" Hunter. As we remember Shirley, let us reflect on her warmth, her strength, and the countless lives she touched throughout her lifetime. May her spirit inspire us all to embrace life with the same passion and joy she shared so generously.
